Quick tips

  • Allow microphone access when prompted.
  • Play music out loud and place your iPhone near the speaker.
  • Headphone or other apps' internal audio cannot be heard by the microphone.
  • Reduce background noise for clearer genre and song recognition results.
  • If a song is identified, you can open it in Apple Music or search for it on supported music services.

Privacy Policy

GenreSense is designed to recognize music genres on your device, with optional song identification powered by system music recognition services.

No account required
No advertising SDKs
Genre analysis runs on device
Song matching may use Apple/Shazam services

Information we collect

GenreSense does not require an account and does not include advertising or third-party analytics SDKs. We do not collect your microphone recordings, recognition history, genre results, or song recognition history on our own servers.

Microphone and audio

Microphone access is used only when you start recognition. Genre recognition audio is analyzed on your device. Recognition clips and history may be saved locally so you can revisit them. They are not uploaded to GenreSense servers.

Song identification

When song identification is available, GenreSense uses Apple's ShazamKit and Apple Music services to try to match nearby music and retrieve song metadata. This may involve Apple or Shazam processing an audio-derived signature or recognition request, and Apple Music catalog metadata may be requested for the matched song.

Song metadata shown in the app may include the song title, artist, Shazam or Apple Music identifiers, artwork URL, Apple Music URL, preview URL, and genre labels. This metadata may be stored locally with your recognition history so the result can be shown again later.

Local data

App preferences, recognition history, explored genres, saved audio clips, and saved song metadata are stored locally on your device. You can remove history within the app or delete the app to remove its locally stored data.

Purchases

Optional in-app purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. GenreSense does not receive or store your payment-card details. Apple's handling of purchase information is governed by Apple's privacy policy.

External services and links

GenreSense may open services such as Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, QQ Music, NetEase Cloud Music, Wikipedia, or Wikimedia when you choose a related link or search action. Those services operate under their own privacy policies.

Children's privacy

GenreSense does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the app or legal requirements change. The latest version will be published here with its effective date.
